Marrakech
by Houtan Froushan

This North African city is one of the jewels in the crown of Morocco, where Africa meets Europe in a harmonious blend. Marrakech is divided into two parts, the modern French-built Gueliz with its designer stores and all the clean uniformity that the West has to offer, and on the other side, the old part, with the old...

The exhibition explores the recent trend among European designers for unique or limited edition pieces that push the boundaries between art and design. It showcases furniture, lighting and ceramics, designed by a new generation of international designers, who are all inspired by the spirit of story-telling.

Each tells a tale through their use of decorative devices, historical allusions or choice of materials, sharing common themes such as fantasy, parody and a concern with mortality. The exhibition runs till October 2009 and admission is free .

  • Winter Wonder-Iceland: Words by Andrew Reid

Like many countries located at high latitudes, Iceland offers a completely different prospect to its visitors in the winter months compared to the summer. The soundtrack is provided by Yann Tiersen and adds an air of mystique, complementary to the sights on display.

It is some beautiful work with some familiar scenes - the opening showing the infamous restaurant on top of the Banyan tree in Bangkok - known for being one of the most inspiring places to share company on a calm evening. The question remains however, which of the two worlds so intricately mixed in the video represents the reality and values we should be striving for?

Two years ago, I decided to pack in the graduate job search to teach English abroad. It is a well paid opportunity to travel and live your day-to-day life in a another country. I had no formal teaching qualifications, but a degree from an English-speaking country is the only prerequisite to teaching in most Eastern countries...

It was either Japan or Korea for me, completely different cultures from our own but with the same creature comforts.

My English-based agent gave me the hard sell on Korea and I was sold. I received the job offer just before Christmas 2005. I emailed my CV and had a brief telephone interview; I was given the job immediately.
